About Bilingual Homes

Where research meets family life.

There is a vast, rich body of research on how children learn multiple languages. On code-switching, on the role of input, on minority language maintenance, on identity and belonging. But much of that knowledge stays inside academic journals, written in language that is not intended for parents navigating daily life.

Bilingual Homes exists to bridge that gap: to translate what researchers know about language acquisition into materials and insights that are calm, clear, and grounded.

Dr. Hilde van Zeeland

Linguistic researcher & author

I'm a linguist specialized in language learning. I received my PhD from the University of Nottingham (UK), after which I worked as a language testing consultant and linguistic researcher.

My partner and I are raising our son bilingually, between Dutch and Spanish. Living between both countries as a family, we've experienced how easily one language can take over, and how much care it takes to keep both languages present. It isn't just about language learning, but also about children's motivation and connection to their languages.

Through both my work and my own experience, I've seen how many families have similar questions and challenges, and how little trustworthy, practical guidance is available. This led me to create Bilingual Homes, where I develop research-based materials to help families support their children's languages in everyday life.
